Our goal is to finish in the world's longest annual kayak marathon within the set time. We will experience a world class wilderness event on the Yukon River, a river so clean you can drink it! We want to do something in return, so that our adventure contributes to the entrepreneurial power of women elsewhere.“Millions of women are prohibited from accomplishing little more than survival. Not because of a lack of ambition, or ability, but because of a lack of safe water and adequate sanitation.”This is why Teams NIGOR Guam & NIGOR Parula (together we are 4WOMEN4WATER) want to donate the equivalent of the race registration fee to Water.org's women’s empowerment projects.

After three years of training - I hope to finally make it to Dawson with my team!
As a volunteer for the race at the Kirkman Creek checkpoint I had the opportunity to see how all the boats and paddlers were doing 600km into the race. Paddlers Abreast was always one of the best organized, happiest, fittest looking boats to arrive. My friend Maralyn Rogers was paddling with them and invited me to apply to paddle in the race in 2013. I was accepted and trained with the team that year until..... my back decided that it was not going to paddle anymore. I spent the winter getting my back in shape and applied again. 2nd time lucky! I trained with the team and was really looking forward to the race. Several days before the start of the race I came down with the flu. Not to be deterred I gave it all that I had left in me but had to pull out in Carmacks. This left my team with the decision to either withdraw from the race - or carry on in "Tourist Class" they chose to carry on proving that this group of ladies is truly unsinkable! They carried on with the class and style to which this boat has become known for and paddled into Dawson with their heads held high! I am attempting again this year to paddle - perhaps third time lucky? I do know that I have learned an incredible amount from this special group of ladies as well as from my Mom, who is a Breast Cancer survivor. Fortitude, class, graciousness and an incredible determination to keep moving ahead, that even when it seems the odds are stacked against you - you keep going - regardless of whether that is Breast Cancer or the various hurdles in life. Look out Dawson, here we come! This ones for you Mom!
