Gary Postle Send Message to Paddler
Gary Postle

Age: 48

Sex: M

From: Ilkeston, Derbyshire, United Kingdom

Biographical Information

I have competed in several triathlons, running races in the Leicestershire Road Runners League and more prominent events such as 2 London Marathons and 5 Great North Run’s. I also enjoy hill walking in The Peak District and Lake District. Almost bizarrely, my most painful endurance event was 54 mile charity walk which I organised from Melton Mowbray to Rutland Water, which we circumnavigated and then walked back to where we started on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year. It was very tiring and my feet were ripped to shreds with blisters – very few managed to complete the course but I am delighted to say that I finished!

Aims for this race

First and foremost to enjoy the event. I am looking forward to building a strong team spirit with the other guys and making a significant contribution to the success of the event.

Reasons for entering this race

This really appealed to me because of the challenge of participating is such a prestigious endurance event. Also, it provides me with an almost unique opportunity to do something different to my usual activities

Craig Batchelor Send Message to Paddler
Craig Batchelor

Age: 28

Sex: M

From: Aberdeen, United Kingdom

Biographical Information

I have always enjoyed camping and try to get a couple of small excursions done every year. My greatest experience was completing the 1000km expedition from Bilbao in the North of Spain to Faro in Portugal by bicycle. I completed this trip in 13 days, with 3 friends, carrying all our food and camping equipment.

Aims for this race

To enjoy it! Obviously, I'd love to finish the race and place highly amongst the top teams, but I would also like to savour what is going to be a once in the life time opportunity.

Reasons for entering this race

I have always been interested in outdoor pursuits and I am very competitive, so this event immediately caught my attention. The opportunity to pitch myself alongside some great athletes, in one of the worlds toughest endurance races, while raising money for Cancer Research was one that I could not pass up.

Dylan Lupton Send Message to Paddler
Dylan Lupton

Age: 40

Sex: M

From: Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, United Kingdom

Biographical Information

Nope. Although having 3 children all 6 and under, every weekend is an endurance event in itself.

Aims for this race

To not get eaten by bears (that’s what my kids worry about most), beat the other Wolseley Voyager, have fun and most of all, raise as much money as we can for CRUK.

Reasons for entering this race

I occasionally ask myself this question, usually about 5 minutes after getting on the row machine or ski erg, but then 5 minutes later I recall that the Yukon River Quest is a once in a life time opportunity and we’re doing it for a good cause.
Plus I wanted to show my family (especially my wife, who when I told her I had entered, laughed and said
I’d never get on the team) that if you put your mind and effort to something then there is nothing you cannot achieve.

Aims for this race

To win! Seriously, to finish and raise lots of money for a very worthwhile charity.

Reasons for entering this race

This has to be the challenge of a lifetime. Very few people get the opportunity to test themselves on such an epic scale as this race will offer, so I feel very lucky.

Rod Connors Send Message to Paddler
Rod Connors

Age: 57

From: Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, United Kingdom

Biographical Information

I spent many a holiday from the age of 16 to 18 trekking the Drakensberg mountains with the Venture Scouts. I didn’t really think of it as endurance at the time but four days at a time continuous hiking wasn’t a bad effort. (Does a five and a half hour flight in a glider count? At least I know I can land safely afterwards.)

Aims for this race

To win! Build team spirit, encounter adventure and have fun.

Reasons for entering this race

A few months before the challenge came up I had decided to get fitter and had joined my local gym. So I was putting in about 4 hours a week doing mostly yoga and some Pilates and I was thoroughly enjoying it. The challenge presented a new goal and the effort of having to dedicate around 7 hours a week to training didn’t seem too daunting. My main reason for entering was the thought of taking part in such an adventure, the second reason was that even if I didn’t succeed in making the team I’d certainly be much fitter quicker than I had originally targeted.

Aims for this race

For me this is about a group of people pushing themselves to the limit, together, for an extremely worthy cause. I hope to be able to make some good friends along the way and that ultimately, we raise a lot of money for Cancer Research.

Reasons for entering this race

The prospect of pushing myself to the very limit in aid of such a good cause was my primary motivation for entering. It will be an incredibly tough challenge but an experience to remember I’m sure.

Aims for this race

Reasons for entering this race

The thing that attracted me to this was the event itself and what it would actually take to qualify. Once qualified, then the training to get up to maximum fitness and to work hard with the group to ensure that I do not let the team down and we finish. And of course, the opportunity to take this huge river on.

I did a charity row around the Isle of Wight in 2008 with my three brothers and niece as coxswain, we believe this was the first time a crew of brothers completed the row. It took us 10 hours and at times the winds were force 5>6.It was a great sense of achievement as we rowed back into Cowes across the finish line to cheers from family and friends. The closest I have been to the Wilderness is in Scotland, in fact our 1st training camp in April is on Loch Tay, which brings back great memories exploring this region with my 2 sons and is one of few true Wilderness areas remaining in the UK.

Aims for this race

My aim is to work with the team to complete the river journey at good speed and finish in the best position we can. I would like to see Wolseley Uk exceed £100,000 fundraising target.

Reasons for entering this race

To be involved in a major fundraising event for Cancer Research UK, my Mum survived Lymphoma with the help of drugs developed by Cancer Research Uk, the cancer returned and my mum sadly passed away in 2010.Me, my family and friends will always be thankful for the years we had with Mum following her treatment.
I love being on the water and the opportunity to compete in one of the World`s Great river races in an area of outstanding rugged scenery.

No real experience other than last year – when my youngest sister organised 10, 10km runs in 10 consecutive days to mark 10 years since we lost our Dad to Cancer and we raised £13.5K between the 4 children and our partners.

Aims for this race

My 2 targets are to make sure we raise more than £100k and to finish in the top 3 in our category

Reasons for entering this race

My initial reaction was, this could be fun & then when I looked in to it, I thought, wow, what a challenge and something to target and achieve. I like to think I’m a fit person, but this is something that will push me to the next level and give me a really hard goal to chase. It is also a great opportunity to raise a lot of money for a very worthwhile cause.

I’ve never entered anything as big as the Yukon Challenge before, however, I have done canoeing in the past, a few Tough Mudders and half marathons. This opportunity is going to give me lots more experience than I’ve ever had and I’m sure I’m going to learn quite a bit about myself.

Aims for this race

To prove that I can push myself to the limit physically and mentally. I doubt I will ever do anything as challenging as this again and I want to make sure I take the opportunity and give everything I have. Aside from this, the most important element is the Charity (Cancer Research UK) and raising money for a great cause. I want the money raised to make a real difference and hopefully take us one step closer to finding a cure for cancer.

Reasons for entering this race

I have always wanted to do a big challenge that would test me. After failing to get into this year’s London Marathon, the opportunity arose for the Yukon Challenge. I’ll be honest and say that I hadn’t heard about this challenge before, but after finding out what is involved it sounded exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. I love being outside, camping and canoeing so the fact that this challenge includes all these activities is exactly what I have been looking for. I also like competing as part of a team.

My endurance experience is limited to 2 yukon races, I have competed in several rowing races but for this one 2k races don’t count.

Aims for this race

My aim is to help both boats finish, keep everyone safe, raise as much for our charity is possible, hopefully get a top 10 place and enjoy the race, which will be my last.

Reasons for entering this race

The Yukon attracted me because the event is so different from other charity events, the training is tough, the event much tougher but the experience as a whole is fantastic, to be involved in something like this for charity is a great privilege.
From a personal perspective my view is that anything that benefits people that need care related to cancer is a good thing, whether it be research or cure based, care or counselling, what ever I can do to help I will,
My personal motivation is simple, cancer has affected my family, if I can help others avoid the distress it causes it can only be positive.

We both took different paths; me in the Yukon and her in medecine in Quebec city. Last year, I bumped into her and she asked me to reunite as a canoe team like the old days, and paddle the YRQ with her! I could not resist this opportunity!

3 x winner of DW Race in C1

Artist and explorer by canoe
Rob was born to Scottish parents in 1953, grew up in London and studied at Camberwell School of Art realising a 1st Class Honours in 3 Dimensional Design Ceramics with a subsidiary in Printmaking. He then set up a studio in Devon before becoming Artist in Residence at Carmel College in Oxfordshire. His post- graduate studies were completed at Goldsmiths. He was appointed Head of Art at Carmel in 1983. At Carmel Rob re-established the redundant Art gallery designed by Sir Basil Spence and also set up a programme of adventurous activities. Rob, a keen mountaineer, began to develop his canoe skills and built a racing C2 and began competing in the Devizes to Westminster canoe race. in 1994 he moved to become Director of Art at Bedford School. At Bedford Rob resurrected the Canoe Club and established a highly regarded unit where boys regularly took part in Devizes to Westminster and other marathon events winning many trophies in the Junior Canoe Class. Rob would often compete with and alongside the boys, winning the C1 class three times, he held the third fastest time for many years. Rob also ran many adventurous canoe trips to Scotland for the School Combined Cadet Force. He retired to become a full time artist in 2013. He continues to coach canoeing and is still active in competition. Robs current artwork has focused on the Rough Bounds; an area in Scotland between Ardnamurchan and Mallaig which he explores using an open canoe and walking the shores of the sea and lochs. He has recently extended his travels further north into Ross and Cromarty. His travels provide the stimulus for prints and sculpture relating to scenes, imagery or experiences on these ventures. His sculpture is constructed from materials found as he travels. He records using drawing, camera and memory. Sometimes he uses a journal. He is not trying to capture exact replicas of imagery, more the feeling and essence of experience and place.

Lots of Yukon wilderness fun! Hiking through the bush with a dog or two by my side enjoying every second even when things don't go as planned, climbing mountains, and cross country skiing.

All racing experience has been in a kayak so far. I have been kayaking my entire life and competed until a few years ago.

Aims for this race

Finish the race happy and smiling having seen the magnificent beavers and bushes along the river.

Reasons for entering this race

Lovers we almost once became. Then we realised the other was completely insane. How did we find ourselves together in a canoe? Neither with any idea what to do! We quit paddling away from each other. Instead we put our powers together. All so we can search for the finest beaver residing along the shore, hiding amongst the bush no more. Or friendship has rhyme but no reason. So why not paddle to Dawson before the end of the season!?!?

Biographical Information

I have been working as an Outdoor Educator/Guide for the past 10 years, working internationally. Mainly leading whitewater expeditions from 5, 12, 20, or 30 days in length. As well as leading off-tracking hiking expeditions. I now currently work as a Wildland Firefighter with the Alberta Government.

I have very limited racing experience, but my racing experience comes from short distance whitewater rafting racing on various rivers.

Aims for this race

- to experience the vibe of what the race offers
- to test myself to my limits along side a crew mate/ best friend.
- to be fully engulfed by the elements that the river and environment will throw at us during the race.
- to see the beauty of the Yukon.
- to try our hardest to not only have a good time on the clock but to see if we can win this race.

Reasons for entering this race

Upon working with Yukon People a few years back, I got to be a distant participant watching the racers come and go within our shop. Once the race commenced I had the opportunity to stand on Yukon People's shed and cheer the racers on their first leg of the race. Since then, I have always wanted to participate within the race and experience what the Yukon River has to offer.
